CONCERTS in the West, the series of chamber music tours around venues in Dorset, Devon and Somerset, returns in 2019 with some exciting performers, new venues and programmes that range from baroque to a world premiere.
The first group of concerts, from 14th to 16th February, features Trio Sora, with a new venue, Wellhayes Vineyard at Clayhanger near Tiverton, for the first of four performances. The second day sees the trio at a regular morning venue, Bridport Arts Centre and evening concert at Ilminster Arts Centre, and the last on Saturday 16th at Crewkerne’s Dance House.
The French-based trio’s programme includes works by Schumann and Brahms, and Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor.
The second series, featuring Sara Deborah and Friends, opens at Wellhayes on Thursday 14th, followed by concerts at Bridport at 11am on Friday 15th, 7.30pm at Ilminster Arts Centre, and the Saturday evening concert is at the Creative Innovation Centre at Taunton.
The trio of Sara Deborah Timossi, violin, Lucy Scotchmer, cello, and Johan Lofving, theorbo, will play works by Biber, Tartini, Giuliani and Paganini.
The April programme by the Mela Guitar Quartet, playing works by Bach, Saint-Saens, Brubeck, Milhaud and more, opens at another new venue, Jordan’s Courtyard at Horton Cross, Ilminster, on Thursday 4th April, with the other concerts at Bridport Arts Centre, the Creative Innovation Centre at Taunton (Friday evening), and Crewkerne’s Dance House on Saturday.
Violinist Elissa Cassini and pianist Alasdair Beatson play works by Schubert, Faure and Brahms, from 2nd to 4th May at Wellhayes, Bridport, Ilminster, a Saturday morning concert at the Centre for Young Musicians at Richard Huish College, Taunton, and an evening concert at the Dance House.
From 13th to 15th June, Moriarty Winds, (who took their name from Sherlock Holmes’s nemesis), play music by Orlando Gibbons, Reicha, Hindemith, Samuel Barber and Debussy at Uplyme church on Thursday, Bridport Arts Centre and the Creative Innovation Centre at Taunton on Friday, and another new venue, the historic St Roch church at Pendomer on Saturday.
The July concerts, from 4th to 6th, at Wellhayes, Bridport, Ilminster and the Dance House, feature the brilliant young pianist Clare Hammond and include the world premiere of Diary Pieces 2018 by Michael Zev Gordon.
The autumn programme brings the Eusebius to Bishop’s Hull, Bridport, Ilminster, Taunton and Crewkerne, from 5th to 7th September; cellist Nathaniel Boyd and pianist Simon Lane, from 3rd to 5th October, at Wellhayes, Bridport, Ilminster and Crewkerne; the Consone Quartet, from 31st October to 2nd November, at Taunton, Bridport, Ilminster and Crewkerne; and the Ruisi Quartet ends the year’s Concerts in the West with one concert, at Ilminster Arts Centre, on 15th November.
