THE members of Milborne Port Opera company are putting the finishing touches to their 2017 production, Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, on stage at Milborne Port Village Hall from 19th to 22nd April.
Into the Woods is Sondheim’s unique take on Grimm fairytales, cleverly uniting Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Cinderella and others into a story that delves into the psychological background of the characters in a way pantomime eschews.
The orchestration is complex and the lyrics verge from the sparklingly witty to the darkly drear. Meet all the characters you know and love, deep in the dark and mysterious woods where anything can happen and the advice is always “be careful what you wish for”.
Directed by Candice Marcus, with musical director Caroline D’Cruz the cast includes Mark Blackham and Allison Gosney as the Baker and his Wife, Ruth McKibbin in the showstopping role of the witch, Gemma Kiddle as Little Red Riding Hood, Phil Elsworth as Jack and Linda Mumford as his mother, Jessie Stones as Cinderella, Lloyd Davies and James Craw as the competing princes, Helen Purdue as Rapunzel, Martin Williams as The Wolf and Sally McConnell as Granny.
