THE vibrant Uchenna Dance company visits the egg at Bath Theatre Royal from 20th to 23rd February with a colourful new show, Hansel and Gretel .
The story follows two young heroes as they brave a big journey and find themselves lost in the city, overwhelmed by the sights, sounds and smells. They must find a way to outwit the adults and get back to their family.!
Director and choreographer Vicki Igbokwe puts her unique Uchenna Dance twist on the story, weaving dance styles including house, waacking and vogue, with African and contemporary dance. She says: “Hansel and Gretel is a story I read as a child. For me, it was always about how brave Hansel and Gretel are, how tenacious, courageous and resourceful. In our version, they use their imagination to help them get out of tricky situations. I really wanted to create a show that celebrates and empowers young people to be brave and think on their feet.”
Instead of breadcrumbs, the youngsters follow the London landmarks, and the evil witch is a helpful (or maybe not so helpful?) stranger. The show has a score by Ghanaian musician Kweku Aacht.
