Maugham by the Fireside

THE Verwood-based Fireside Theatre has organised a reading of W Somerset Maugham’s The Breadwinner at  6, Bridleways from 7pm on Wednesday 1st May.

The comedy centres on the life of Charlie Battle, a wealthy member of the Stock Exchange whose wife and children have grown accustomed to living a life of luxury.  What they don’t know is that Charlie is in financial difficulties, so they go about planning even more ways to spend even more of his money.

The 1930 play is written in continuous action, with the audience privy to the facts only late on. It was revived in 2013 in Richmond.
