Pop-up shop at The Story Pig

FARMERS James and Charlotte Hull, who rear Tamworth pigs at their farm on the edge of Sandford Orcas near Sherborne, are running a pop-up shop at the farm every Saturday, from 10am to 2pm.

The couple, who farm on sustainable and high welfare principles, describe the meat from their rare breed animals as “a taste of the past.” Tamworths are the oldest pure breed of native pig in the British Isles, most closely linked to the wild woodland pigs of a bygone age, and with a distinctive appearance due to their beautiful red-haired coats.

As well as the Tamworth pork, sausages, bacon and other products, the shop will also have jams, chutneys, and home-made cakes “depending how much time I have left after the butchery,” says Charlotte.

James and Charlotte are passionate about their pigs – “their welfare, happiness and indeed their very existence. Tamworths are most at home living outside all year round being raised on large areas of pasture, where they can root around for all manner of tasty morsels.”

Like most native breeds, Tamworths take much longer to mature than modern breeds used in commercial intensive farming but this slow growth has its advantages when it comes to its distinctive taste.

Charlotte says: “Tamworths are an intelligent and sensitive breed and a delight to be around and as such we know each pig on the farm individually and can trace their lineage from the day they are born.”

The Hulls love their animals and are committed to raising them to the highest ethical and animal welfare standards, and ensure that stress is minimised by using an abattoir just a few miles from the farm.

With Christmas now just a few weeks away, there will be dry cured gammons available as well as the usual range of products. You can buy The Story Pig’s Tamworth products direct from the new pop-up shop, at Dorset Farmers Markets in Sherborne and Bridport, from Red Barn Farm Shop near Mudford and from Brimsmore gardens farm shop in Yeovil. You can also orders via the website or by phone. The meat is butchered as and when the pigs mature, so delivery dates may vary slightly depending on availability.
