THE Tisbury-based Commandery Players have chosen Sir John Vanbrugh’s Restoration comedy The Relapse for their 2019 production in The Commandery at Ansty, on from 13th to 15th June at 7.30.
This riotous comedy is as popular today as when it first delighted audiences. Written in Vanbrugh’s characteristic exuberant and witty style, it features a collection of great comic characters, the most famous of which is the outrageous social climber Lord Foppington. In this society of superficiality, human folly is writ large – corruption, selfishness and scheming deceptions are all ridiculed before virtue triumphs in the end. All we can hope is that in our own similar contemporary society, the ending will be as happy!
The Relapse has been adapted by the director, Mike Whittaker.
The Commandery is an ideal setting to replicate the intimacy of a late 17th century theatre and the beautiful grounds will be available for picnics by the lake. The doors will open at 6pm with the performances starting at 7.30pm.
