Sharing a husband under Taliban rule

THE writer of The Kite Runner has a new play, on stage at Nuffield Theatre City in Southampton until 6th July.

This is the UK premeiere of A  Thousand Splendid Suns, which starts at 15-year-old Laila is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed.

Mariam was born a generation later. When Laila is orphaned, her life and Mariam’s collide as they are forced to share the same husband.

After the Taliban takeover, life is a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. As the war rages and the years pass, the country grows more oppressive and so does Rasheed.

But the bonds of love, family and friendship may offer the only escape and drive them to overcome the most daunting obstacles.

This is the powerful story of three generations of women who discover strength in unity.
