Surgical approach to dance

SURGERY may seem an unlikely inspiration for dance, but it is the informed background to a new dance work, in which three skilled performers will take the audience into the heart of the operating theatre, at Gillingham School on Saturday 21st March.

Artsreach has just one performance by Sadhana Dance of Under My Skin, which blends physical dance, medicine and science, to explore the unseen practices of the hospital operating theatre.

Drawing on Bharata Natyam technique, Sadhana Dance invites the audience to witness an operating theatre in motion, a setting in which dexterity, intricate movement and precisely controlled exchanges are vital in the preservation of life.

Under My Skin is a collaboration with audio visual artists Kathy Hinde and Matthew Olden, lighting designer Aideen Malone, dramaturg Chris Fogg, costume designer Kate Rigby and poet Allan Fisher. It was developed in association with Professor Roger Kneebone, Professor of Surgical Education at Imperial College London.
