The continuing fascination of Northanger Abbey

SALISBURY’S Studio Theatre has chosen the Tim Luscombe adaptation of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, first seen at the city’s Playhouse in 2009, for its spring production at the Ashley Road  venue from Monday 20th to Saturday 25th May.

Jane Austen’s early work takes its audience on an adventure, as the unlikely heroine Catherine Morland. Catherine likes to read and her taste is for Gothic fantasy, especially Mrs Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho.

Taken by her aunt to Bath, Catherine encounters a social whirl she has never experienced in her Wiltshire village home. Befriending Isabella Thorpe and her brother John, she meets the charming but eccentric Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor.

But can she restrain her fantasies so that they don’t intrude into her daily life in Bath society …

Six performances are scheduled at Studio Theatre, and as always, tickets are selling fast. For more details, contact Salisbury Information Centre or visit
