The Great War at Bourton

BOURTON’s World War 1 project continues in the autumn with plans for an exhibition, speakers, musical events and the construction of an on-line archive.

The project, which has funding from the Heritage Lottery, Bourton Parish Council and the Dorset Rural Fund, has already made a great impact on the village with the community play, On Them Our Lives Depend, earlier in the summer.

The play told the story of the local women who worked in Bourton Mill, producing munitions for the war effort. It portrayed the lives of ordinary people during the war and showed how it affected women particularly, by giving them a taste of independence in employment.

The project organisers, Sue Ashby and Tony Benge, are inviting local people to share any family letters, photos or other memories which will bring more stories alive.
