Wanting more at the Regent Centre

PUPILS from Priestlands School in Lymington are travelling to the Regent Centre in Christchurch to stage their summer production, Oliver!, on Wednesday and Thursday 19th and 20th July.

Lionel Bart’s his show, which will accompanied by a band of student musicians, is the first time that Priestlands has performed at the Regent.  The school has a fine reputation for its annual, whole-school shows which are  produced in close collaboration with M3 Productions, which provides professional set and technical support.

Such is their popularity that they have  outgrown the school performance space. The move to the Regent Centre allows for larger audiences and the company is very excited to be able to welcome members of the wider community to share in this musical extravaganza.

Oliver!, packed full of unforgettable tunes, is based on the Charles Dickens classic.   The cast of more than 100 students from years seven to 11 brings the story to vibrant life.

Director Jillian Strath, says: “We are really proud of the performing arts at Priestlands School and we thoroughly enjoy giving such a large number of students the opportunity to contribute to such an exciting project. Seeing the students grow in confidence, gain valuable life skills, and be immensely proud of the work they produce makes all the blood, sweat and tears worth it. Our school productions remain one of the highlights of their time at school for many of our students.”

Priestlands takes part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival every year and has received high praise for performances at a national level.

The story starts in a sinister Victorian workhouse, where the starving orphans are barely kept alive by a daily meagre bowl of gruel. Oliver Twist is “elected” by the other inmates to approach the bad tempered beadle, Mr Bumble and ask for more.

Bart’s brillian score includes Food Glorious Food, I’d Do Anything, Oom-Pah-Pah, Who Will Buy,  Reviewing the Situation, As Long As He Needs Me and Consider Yourself.
