STEVEN Spielberg’s spectacular new film version of West Side Story has a screening at Milborne St Andrew village hall on Friday 8th April at 7.30pm.
The film has stellar performances from all five leading performers, and the choreography is breathtaking. For those who remember the original film, a remake didn’t seem a good idea, but Spielberg and his team have worked their magic, and with the Bernstein/Sondheim words and music, this great show emerges bright, passionate, enthralling and tragic.
It’s not better than the original, but it is subtly different, and there are aspects and performances which are better. Ariana DeBose as Anita has been the stand-out star, as far as this year’s award nominations go, but Rachel Zegler’s Maria is heart-breaking Ansel Orgort makes a handsome and brave Tony.
Rita Morena, the original Anita, is back, this time running Doc’s bar where some of the crucial action takes place. This gives an edge to the friction between the white all-American boys, led by Riff (Mike Faist), and the Puerto Ricans, led by Bernardo (David Alvarez.)
