Enchanting tails and tales

CHRISTMAS may be over, but Bath’s Egg theatre has an ongoing programme of fun plays and entertainments for children – January brings winter magic with Play Time: A Winter’s Tail on Saturday and Sunday 17th and 18th, and Jack and The Beanstalk (Sort Of) on Saturday 24th (two performances).

The Last Baguette’s show, the latest in the company’s interactive Play Time series, is a one-hour, play-along theatre adventure for children aged two years and over. It is a celebration of the solstice tradition – the snow is falling and the solstice is approaching. Ratty is getting ready. She wants everything to be really rat-tastic! But will her friends make it through the snow to the winter woodland revels?

The company was founded by actors Tristan Green and Sidney Rob, graduates of the Philippe Gaulier and Jacques Lecoq schools in Paris. Now based in Wiltshire, The Last Baguette produces entertaining, accessible and eccentric shows for family audiences that tour the UK and Europe. They use live music, physical comedy, puppetry, visual storytelling and silliness to talk about important issues of our times. The Egg performances are the final dates in the 2025/2026 tour for Play Time: A Winter’s Tail.

Jack and the Beanstalk (Sort Of) is a new solo show from Bristol-based musician and theatre-maker Kid Carpet. Described as “the Mighty Boosh for kids” (Strike A Light Festival), this charming production is recommended for children aged three to ten years and their families.

It features Kid Carpet and the cuddly characters of Bear, Gorilla, Badger and Hedgehog as they embark on an unconventional pantomime extravaganza. Kid Carpet hates panto. The Noisy Animals absolutely love it. So guess what they’re doing? Yep … a panto, part air-guitar workshop, part magical mess, a lo-fi, hi-tech, big-beat bonkers show stuffed with songs, silliness and surprise grannies.

Kid Carpet, whose real name is Ed Patrick, is a musician, video and theatre maker from the south west who has performed internationally since 2003, collaborating with theatre companies, schools and social groups to co-create shows, films, music and artworks. He has produced and starred in a host of quirky and engaging solo shows for younger audiences.

A Winter’s Tail is at The Egg on Saturday 17th to Sunday 18th January, at 10am, 11.30am and 2pm. Jack and the Beanstalk (Sort of) is on Saturday 24th at 11.30am and 3pm.
