Orwell’s future doesn’t seem so far away

THE acting students from Arts University Bournemouth will be performing a version of George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel, 1984, in the studio theatre on their Wallisdown campus from 29th to 31st October.

Celebrated director Robert Icke worked with Duncan Macmillan on the adaptation of the 1949 novel in 2013, and their version has been chosen by AUB director Fiona Ross for this production, which includes the first attempt to dramatise the appendix to the novel.

Set in the dark world of Oceania, where Big Brother watches everyone and free thought is a crime, it follows Winston Smith, a quiet party worker who dares to break the rules. He begins to write a secret diary and falls in love with Julia, risking everything to fight back against a cruel and controlling system.

Performances are nightly at 7.30, with a 2.30 Saturday matinee.
