Autumn walks, talks and events with the National Trust

THE leaves are already turning golden and ochre, the hedges are heavy with red and black berries, and there is an autumnal feel to the mornings – what better time to get out around this beautiful region and enjoy the scenery and heritage of the south west. The National Trust has a host of interesting events, many free – including the pleasure of walking in the woods at Stourhead on a rainy day, as in this beautiful photograph by Chris Lacey.

The packed programme of National Trust events includes free Heritage Open days at many properties, a sculpture exhibition in the garden at Avebury Manor, guided landscape walks, a photography exhibition at Lacock Abbey, the home of photography, in collaboration with the international Magnum Photos cooperative, a regency exhibition at Mompesson House in Salisbury, a charity abseil down Alfred’s Tower in aid of SOS Africa, yoga, a wetland bird walk and a fungi discoveries on Brownsea Island, artisan crafts at Corfe Castle every Friday through to November, apple pressing at Hardy’s cottage, Victorian cooking at Hardy’s house, Max Gate, garden tours and willow weaving at Kingston Lacy, and a wildlife trail at Studland.

There are many more events – visit the National Trust website or individual properties for more information.
