BOURNEMOUTH Symphony Orchestra, the region’s leading classical music organisation, regularly includes music with a lighter touch in its programme, alongside mainstream and more serious works. Starting on 5th February, there is a series of concerts featuring music from some of the greatest blockbuster films of the past 40 or so years, composed by two of the all-time movie music greats.
The Best of Williams & Zimmer, conducted by Pete Harrison, includes John Williams’ Imperial March from Star Wars, Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter, music from Schindler’s List, Driving Miss Daisy and ET (the flying theme); and Hans Zimmer’s soundtracks from Interstellar, The Dark Knight, The Da Vinci Code, Gladiator and The Last Samurai.
The Williams and Zimmer concerts are at Weymouth Pavilion on 5th February and Queen’s Theatre, Barnstaple, on 7th February, and Fareham Live on 19th February. Another movie-themed programme, John Williams Blockbusters, is at Bristol Beacon on 27th March, Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre, on 29th March,
Other BSO concerts during February include Fate and Fortune, a Grieg and Tchaikovsky programme, conducted by Anna Rakitina, on Wednesday 4th at Poole Lighthouse, an all-Shostakovich programme conducted by Kirill Karabits, at Poole on Wednesday 11th and Exeter University Great Hall on Thursday 12th, Curious Creatures and Adventurous Animals at Westlands, Yeovil, on Saturday 21st (at 3pm), and Beethoven’s violin concerto (soloist Clara-Jumi Kang) and Elgar’s 2nd Symphony, conducted by BSO principal conductor Mark Wigglesworth, at Poole on Wednesday 25th.
