Classic screening for Holy Week

ONE of the masterpieces of the silent screen, Cecil B DeMille’s The King of Kings will be screened at St Gregory’s Church, Marnhull, on Tuesday 31st March, at 7pm, as part of the parish’s Holy Week events.

The film is being shown again, by popular demand, and will be accompanied by improvisational music from the international concert organist, David Briggs, recorded on the Sweetland organ at the former Gillingham Methodist Church in 2012.

David has given permission for his music to be used for this event. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served following the screening. King of Kings.

Next year marks the centenary of this epic film, which is described as both a major work of religious devotion and an epic milestone in cinema history. Premiered in 1927, the film follows the life of Jesus Christ from the conversion of Mary Magdelene through the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension.

Inspired by the works of some of the great artists, DeMille composed each scene with skill, while emphasising and celebrating the gentleness and dignity of Christ. At his triumphant resurrection, this black and white film suddenly bursts into colour – a remarkable and moving cinematic device portraying a world redeemed…
