Godber’s look at Northern Soul

THE sounds of Northern Soul come to Bath Theatre Royal from 29th July to 2nd August, when John Godber’s touring play Do I Love You? takes the stage.

Sally, Nat and Kyle, 20-something and ready to keep the faith, learn about the genre from the hits of Edwin Starr, Frankie Valli, Frank Wilson, Eloise Laws, Jimmy Radcliffe and many more in this hilarious comedy set in 1975 – when the country is wracked by rising costs, unemployment and small-town blues. The pubs are closing, hospitality is under threat and workers are strking for their rights. Fifty years on, it all sounds a bit familiar.

What started as a College project for the trio of ‘soulies’ has grown into a passion, but the dance steps are exhausting. Far beyond their home city of Hull, they find excitement, purpose and the tribe they’ve been looking for, and they can’t get enough!
