Mowlem Raising the Roof fund

THE Mowlem Theatre at Swanage has stood proudly overlooking the sea for almost 60 years, sometimes battered by winds, rain and even snow. But now the old roof is leaking and the theatre has launched an urgent crowdfunding appeal for £10,000 to stop the leaks and save the building.

This much-loved community space has a long history of hosting local performers and groups, classical ensembles, jazz, rock and folk bands, supporting local causes, showing the latest blockbusters and classic films, and creating countless memories for the people of Swanage and beyond.

The roof, a stubbornly flat relic from another era, has been leaking for a while – and it’s getting worse. The Mowlem staff and volunteers have done all they can with temporary fixes, but they are no longer enough. Without urgent repairs, there is a very real possibility of shows being cancelled, key equipment being damaged – or even having to close the building.

To avoid this, the Mowlem management is calling on the community to support its Raise the Roof appeal. Funds raised will go directly towards adding a permanent weather-proof layer to the existing roof, ensuring the building remains watertight for years to come.

Donations from £1 upwards are welcomed, and every penny really does help to keep the space open and the venue dry. There are a number of rewards for donors, such as the opportunity to have a plaque with your name on one of the auditorium seats, as well as Mowlem-branded merchandise and experiences, including tote bags, umbrellas and backstage tours.

The Crowdfunder is now live at: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/raise-the-roof-mowlem and will finish on 14th November.
