25th anniversary of 9/11

Searching for home

WIMBORNE Community Theatre, currently celebrating its 35th anniversary, was joined by local singers, children from Wimborne First and St Michael’s Schools, members of Millstream Theatre and young musicians from QE School, for a new production, Belonging – Our search for Home, outdoors at Kingston Lacy from 22nd to 27th September.

Belonging is a tale of families and fortunes, loss and longing. The audience will be led by historical and contemporary characters through the landscape around Kingston Lacy. Actors of all ages have taken some part in creating ideas, words, songs and music on the theme of Home, responding to questions such as “Is home a place or a feeling?” and “Where do we belong?”

Rehearsals took place at Kingston Lacy, led by guest director, Rohan Gotobed, with support from the National Trust. As part of the Wimborne Town of Culture programme, there were also lantern-making workshops at Kingston Lacy and Leigh Road Community Centre, led by WCT member Clare Small.

Rohan said “It’s been wonderful to develop this play over the last 12 months. I can’t wait for Dorset audiences to join us on this immersive journey and discover what makes Kingston Lacy, and Wimborne, so special.”

Sheila Wiggins, a new member of the community theatre group, says: “It’s important the stories of everyday people are told and so I have found it meaningful to bring to life a lesser-known character from Wimborne. It’s also great fun being part of such a big production and performing at Kingston Lacy.”

The musical director was the Shaftesbury-based composer and musician Karen Wimhurst, who has led workshops on song making, as well as building a choir of local singers.

Belonging, is a landmark project for Wimborne Town of Culture which has been made possible with funding from Arts Council England. Over its 35 year history creating community theatre in the landscape and in non-theatre spaces, Wimborne Community Theatre has developed and performed more than 20 productions inspired by local places and the lives of inhabitants, past and present, real and fictional.
