THE critically acclaimed Nick Dear stage adaptation of Frankenstein is the choice of Street Theatre for its production at Strode Theatre, Street, from 12th to 15th November.
This version of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, had its world premiere at the Royal National Theatre in February 2011. The production was directed by Danny Boyle and the cast was led by Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, who alternated the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature.
In Street’s production of Frankenstein, directed by Adam Lanfranchi, the Creature is played by Martyn Jessop and Jonathan Sansam is Victor Frankenstein.
The story revolves around Frankenstein, a young and recklessly arrogant scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox experiment. Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile world by his horror-struck maker.
Met with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.
The story may be more than 200 years old, but it raises relevant, contemporary and urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect and the nature of good and evil, all embedded within a thrilling Gothic tale.
