Turning the clock back in Ilminster

AN Englishman’s home is his castle, the saying goes, and if your dream castle is kitted out in the colours and decor of the 1950s, so what? That is how Judy and Johnny have chosen to live, in a marriage built around a fifties fantasy of pre-tech perfection.

Laura Wade’s brilliantly funny but occasionally scarily thought-provoking 2018 play Home, I’m Darling has been chosen by Ilminster Entertainments Society for the spring show at the Warehouse Theatre, on from Wednesday 29th April to Saturday 2nd May. On an evocative set designed by Dave Goodall, Irene Glynn directs her six-strong cast in this pastel period piece, with Jennifer Rusinek and James Mitchell, Olwen Herridge, Kate Hallett, Paula Joselyn and Rob Bedford.

Judy, who was made redundant from her high-powered job three years before the play starts, has used her nest egg to create the home she and Johnny always wanted. She stays at home and keeps a perfect house, cooks perfect meals and has everything perfect every day for Johnny when he returns home from work as an estate agent.

But is she discovering that being a domestic goddess isn’t quite as easy as it looks when you try to superimpose the whole aural of the 1950s into the early 21st century. Can nostalgia go too far?

There is the ever-present question of Johnny’s long awaited (and much needed) promotion? Is ‘happily ever after’ a realistic dream.

IES warns that the show is not suitable for audiences under the age of 14.
